Our History

The Rutherford church of Christ began on September 11, 2005 in a storefront on E. Main Street in Spindale, North Carolina, and after several months there we moved into a larger building located at 953 US 221 Hwy N in nearby Rutherfordton. The church purchased eight acres of land just next door at 925 US 221 Hwy N, and built a new five-thousand square foot church building (see photo above) with several classrooms, a very adequate kitchen and fellowship area, large rest rooms, a baptismal pool, nice office, and a large auditorium designed for seating two-hundred people.

On Sunday, January 6, 2013, the first services were held in our present facility. The congregation’s minister at the time, Mr. Jim Hobbs, said that, “It was a momentous occasion as more than 80 men, women, and children celebrated this special day. I was privileged to deliver the first sermon offered within the new building. I emphasized that God had worked through many men, women, and children of the Lord’s church to make our new, permanent home possible, that it was certainly a day to praise God.”

Mr. Jim Hobbs had been our minister for 9 years. Prior to his preaching he was a business man but decided he wanted to have more bible knowledge in order to be a better Bible teacher. As a result of that desire he entered the North Carolina School of Biblical Studies in Clemmons, NC (just outside of Winston-Salem) where he had intensive classroom teaching from every book of the Bible, New Testament Greek, homiletics (sermon preparation and delivery), and hermeneutics (the science of bible study). Upon his graduation he became our first full-time preacher in 2009.  Both Mr. Hobbs and Mr. Gilbert Tripp (one of our late elders) had taught various classes for several years at the NC School of Biblical Studies. The Lord God has blessed us many times over the years here at the Rutherford church of Christ.

In the spring of 2018, our beloved minister Mr. Jim Hobbs decided it was time to retire from the ministry. Since then, we have hired a new minister, Mr. Stephen Hughes. He and his family joined us on January 4, 2019. He graduated from the Central Carolina School of Preaching in Sumter, SC, in June of 2017, and spent the intervening time in the Lighting the Fire program at the Seven Hills church of Christ in Lynchburg, VA.

We are very fortunate to have so many dedicated Christian men and women who make up our congregation. The congregation is involved in many different types of ministry in the Rutherfordton, NC, including our overseas mission work in India, Honduras, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
