Mark: The Preparation

Mark 1:1-15

Chapter 1

  1. On the outset, Mark states that Jesus is the Christ and the Son of God (1:1).

    1. Throughout this gospel account, we note this theme in the recognition of Jesus.

      1. Mark 1:11; 9:7 – God recognizes Him.

      2. Mark 1:24; 3:11; 5:7 – the demons recognize Him.

      3. Mark 8:29 – disciples recognize Him (finally).

      4. Mark 10:47 – blind Bartimaeus recognizes Him.

      5. Mark 15:39 – a Roman centurion recognizes Him.

    2. Mark begins with this assertion, proves it, and shows the conclusion inescapable.

    3. This does not mean that some do not falter—they do.

    4. Many more still do not recognize Him or refuse to recognize Him.

      1. Jewish leaders rejected Him (3:6).

      2. Hometown rejected Him (6:6).

      3. Disciples are blind and deaf (8:18).
